The huge challenge facing the computing community today is how to make programming multi-cores easier. With this in mind, the VELOX project, “An Integrated Approach to Transactional Memory on Multi-Core Computers” funded by the European Comission with € 4m, launched with the objective of delivering seamless transactional memory (TM) systems that integrate well at all levels of the system stack at the beginning of this year.

The VELOX project is a three-year European-led research effort to develop seamless transactional memory (TM) systems for multi-core computers that integrate well at all levels of the system stack. The project is backed by the VELOX consortium, coordinated by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, that unites nine research and systems integration organizations.

Prof. Maurice Herlihy of Brown University and Prof. Nir Shavit of Tel Aviv University have released a comprehensive presentation of the principles and tools available for programming multiprocessor machines that is touted to be
of immediate use to programmers working with the new architectures.

A new FP7 project on Transactional Memory for Multi- and Many-core Computers has been accepted for EPFL. The project will start in January 2008 and will involve Prof. Rachid Guerraoui's LPD lab.
